How We Test
Methodology used across all TrailCell Lab rankings
Rankings on this site are not sorted by affiliate commission. They’re sorted by whether a unit can do the job you bought it for — keep a fridge cold, charge phones overnight, run a CPAP, or power a campsite without a generator.
What we measure
- Usable watt-hours — discharge under realistic loads until cutoff, not until a convenient 80%
- Charge time — wall charge timed with a stopwatch; solar claims treated as weather-dependent
- Fridge overnight — the prep test that separates marketing from backup
- Noise — fan behavior at idle and under load (bedroom / tent matters)
- Cold-weather notes — LiFePO4 still loses usable capacity in winter
- Ports & ergonomics — can four people charge without a splitter hunt?
- Street price — MSRP is usually fiction; we cite typical street ranges
How scene guides differ
The homepage ranks overall picks for most buyers. Scene guides re-weight the same evidence:
- Camping — weight, port count, solar input, packability
- Home backup — Wh, fridge runtime, expansion, UPS-ish switchover
- RV & van life — continuous watts, solar, expansion path
Brand focus
TrailCell Lab concentrates editorial depth on Anker, EcoFlow, and Jackery — the mainstream US Amazon portable-power brands in our live PartnerBoost catalog. Other names (Bluetti, Zendure, Fossibot) appear for context when useful, without pretending every brand gets equal lab time.
We Always
- Disclose affiliate links
- Separate ranking from payout
- Update when a model is replaced or repriced
We Never
- Sell #1 placement
- Hide cons that matter for the scene
- Treat manufacturer Wh as gospel
